Character Inspiration: Donovan Circus Lookalikes (Felix)

In case you’ve missed my previous posts, we’re taking a look at my celebrity lookalikes for Donovan Circus characters. It’s been so fun! I spend a lot of time on Pinterest looking at food  or nerdy things, but I also like scanning through the celebrity pictures because it helps give me inspiration for characters. You can see the celebrity lookalikes for Lucy Sullivan here, Sheffield Donovan here, or Medved here.

Since I’ve covered the three biggest characters from BURNED, I thought I’d choose a bigger character from BURNED to look at today.

Dr. Felix James Hardy is my first villain from GIFTED. He’s quite the puzzle, as he is a human scientist with incredible knowledge about the gifted world. After an accident in the lab, he becomes obsessed with becoming gifted himself. The real problem, however, is that he tells Lucy the truth about her father, things that Sheffield never really planned to share with her. Felix might be a little crazy, but he’s one of the few willing to tell Lucy exactly how it is and what to expect, leaving her wondering who to trust.

I’ve explained a lot of his backstory in this post in case you want to know what makes him tick, so I won’t go into all the details again, but just know that he didn’t always start out as the bad guy. In fact, he’s the farthest thing from your typical bad guy.

He’s unusual, nonthreatening, a small, wiry nerd. In fact, he was bullied for most of his life, lending to the idea that no one would ever guess him to be as dangerous and evil as he really is. But scary villains don’t need to be super buff all the time. He relies on his brilliant mind, which can sometimes be even more dangerous than muscle.

Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott is my ideal Felix J. Hardy. He just looks the part; put a pair of wire-rimmed glasses on him and he’s perfect. You’ve seen him play Moriarty in Sherlock, sure, but I think Scott could do an amazing job playing that fine line of villain and victim. One minute he can be soft and unassuming, almost sympathetic, but then a mood swing shows his true psychopathic nature. Plus Scott looks whip-smart, which Felix certainly is, and could play that nerdy looking scientist who wants nothing more than to become gifted by his own hand.

Steve Carell also looks very much like how I envision Felix (and he’s at the right age), plus I’d love to see if he could pull off the angry villain. Carell has that soft-spoken personality that fits with Felix’s bullied victim side and I know he could pull off that sly attitude that makes Lucy question everything she knows.

Simon Pegg

Simon Pegg

Simon Pegg is another one who I’d love to see play a villain, just because I’ve never seen it before. Pegg is the right age and build, a guy that looks a bit of an unassuming, quiet nerd but could easily turn into a rage monster at the wrong word. I think Pegg could really pull off the “is he or isn’t he?” part of the character, leading people to think he might not be as bad as rumors make him out to be.

So there you have it, my picks for Dr. Felix J. Hardy from GIFTED. Which of the three are your favorite, or do you envision someone else to play the part?

Character Inspiration: Donovan Circus Lookalikes (Medved)

Because I’m doing this celebrity lookalike feature, I decided to extend it a little farther. Obviously I want to showcase everyone, so I’ll be keeping it up next week with more characters. Since I’ve highlighted two of the main characters – Lucy Sullivan and Sheffield Donovan – I thought I’d list my third VIP character from BURNED. Today I want to give you a better look at Medved.

angry bear

That’s right – Medved, the new Big Bad. As per the synopsis, he’s a Russian thug and powerful Shapeshifter. His preferred shape is a large, vicious bear. And here’s your fun fact of the day: Medved means “Bear” in Russian. Did I just blow your mind? I hope so.

In any case, Medved is a different villain from the one in GIFTED. He’s an attack first, ask questions later type of guy, flattening obstacles in his path rather than going around them. Medved does not empathize and rather enjoys the destruction of battle. He wants a war of gifted versus humans and fully believes in his superiority.

So now that you have a better idea of the villain from BURNED, let’s see who I’ve picked as celebrity lookalikes.

Gerard Butler in 300

Gerard Butler in 300

I have no idea how I came about it, but when I saw this photo of Gerard Butler, I immediately associated him with my bad guy. Medved is totally buff, thanks to all the hard years of prison, battles, and general mayhem. Butler’s dark hair and beard are important, though Medved’s facial hair is a little unrulier. The battle wounds are also a big plus.

Rory McCann in Alexander

Rory McCann in Alexander

Rory McCann AKA THE MOTHERFREAKING HOUND on Game of Thrones, is also a contender. He’s a total beast, hulking over everyone with all his muscles. This photo of him from Alexander, however, is a great depiction with that thick beard and hair. Plus I know from GOT that this guy could play crazy and violent. He does is all seasons long in the hit HBO series.

Joe Manganiello

Joe Manganiello

Now OBVIOUSLY Joe Manganiello is far too pretty to be Medved as is. He’d need a few more scars and a few less showers, but all the same, I know thanks to True Blood that this guy can play rage. The growling, the hardened body, the wild eyes – I think he’d be a great villain!

So there you go, insight to the new villain of BURNED and some fun celeb matches 🙂 We’ll take another look at some more friends (and maybe another villain) next week! Be sure to see more inspiration on my Donovan Circus Pinterest board!

Character Inspiration: Donovan Circus Lookalikes (Sheffield)

For funsies I’m doing a celebrity lookalike game for my Donovan Circus characters. You can see my three picks for Lucy Sullivan here.

Step right up, Sheffield Donovan! It’s time to take a look at our owner and ringmaster. This guy is dear to my heart and I learn a little more about him everyday. Over the course of the books, while he is Lucy’s boss, he also becomes a father figure of sorts. He cares deeply for his circus family and would do anything – and I do mean anything – for them. One of my favorite things about him is how he refers to Lucy (“I don’t know, kid”) because it strengthens their bond (plus, it’s so very Han Solo. The things you learn from me, right?!).

That 'stache.

That ‘stache.

Sheffield’s an interesting character because he’s got a sketchy past of his own. There are mistakes he’s trying to make up for, and he’s constantly reminding himself of his humanity. Because of his gift, of what he is – a Collector – he has to keep a safe balance between helping others and flat out taking their gift by accident. You can read BURNED to find out more about his history, his friendship with Lucy’s father, and one of his biggest fears. (See what I did there?!) Now, let’s get to the fun part.

First, let’s talk about that mustache. This photo on the left has the perfect ringmaster handlebar mustache I envision. It’s essential to Sheffield’s character, a physical attribute that’s become a part of him.

He’s even got the coif I picture Sheffield having. Sheffield Donovan is a logical, very standard guy’s guy – but he’s also a showman, so he understand being put together. Each night, he dresses to impress and that includes a slicked back hairstyle, the mustache just so, and his outfit clean and pressed.

So now that we’ve talked about the very necessary mustache, let’s talk celebrity lookalikes. I’ve got three picks below here and I’m curious to see if any surprise or excite you (you know, should my books ever be made into a movie *snort*).

Bruce Greenwood

Bruce Greenwood

Bruce Greenwood is my top pick for Sheffield. Put that mustache on him and he’s exactly who I picture. He’s old enough where he’s got plenty of wisdom, but still young and spry enough to have a handle on all things Donovan Circus. He’s tough and firm on his employees, but still cares and shows empathy when needed. Plus – what a good looking guy, right?!

Jeff Daniels

Jeff Daniels

Jeff Daniels is another great actor I’d love to see as Sheffield Donovan. He’s definitely got the firmness down and the no-nonsense attitude required of a busy ringmaster. He’s funny, too, and I can see him making those off-handed snarky remarks to Lucy under his breath or rolling his eyes when he thinks she’s being overdramatic.

Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges

Obviously I’m dreaming out of my league, but I love Jeff Bridges. He can play stern or soft, empathetic or vengeful, and I think he would really flesh out the roundness of Sheffield’s character. There might be a gruffness about him, but also a very old school type of charm that reminds me of Sheffield – because he is, after all, a performer himself. But he’s a fighter, too, and Bridges could show that side of Sheffield never backing down from a fight.

So, what do you guys think? Any of these 3 strike your fancy to play Sheffield Donovan? Or maybe you have other suggestions? I’d love to hear ’em. In the meantime, I’ll be working on more characters. I have one superb choice for Felix from GIFTED and another one for Grayson from BURNED. And of course, I have to get to Gabriel, Keegan, and the rest of Lucy’s gang. ‘Til then!

Character Inspiration: Donovan Circus Lookalikes (Lucy)

This week I’m doing something fun: putting real faces to the Donovan Circus gang! Now of course this is all purely for entertainment, but I think you’ll enjoy it. Plus, it might give you more “face to name” ideas of how I picture my characters, since I know everyone always has a few nuances with their imaginations. Keep tuning back cause I’ll be going through the whole list of characters you’ve met, including a few new ones from BURNED 😉

Today’s feature is of course our narrator and main circus freak, Lucy Sullivan. Lucy often describes herself as “the dreaded c word: cute” as opposed to beautiful. She’s a fiery redhead (long, straight hair), with freckles, hazel eyes, and average height and build.

Those of course are just her physical attributes. She’s a Firestarter, a female version no less, which is less than rare in the gifted world. That helps make her who she is: young and a bit naive, she has a lot to learn about her new world. She might get scared, but she is determined and loyal, fiercely protective of her family (blood or otherwise). A few readers have described her as spunky and I like that term a lot for Lucy. She might worry and whine, but when it comes down to it, she’s the first one in line to protect her friends.

So now that you know more about Lucy, let’s see who I’ve picked as her real life/celebrity lookalikes!

This girl. I don’t know who this girl is, but the Swedish photographer Leonard Gren took this photo and I have half a mind to write him to ask about her. There’s something perfect about this photo that captures the way I picture Lucy. She’s tough and determined, but there’s still a softness, even naivete about her because she is so young. The moment I saw this photo, I knew it was inspiration for Lucy.

molly-quinn-profile

Molly Quinn

Molly Quinn is a beautiful girl and I think would make a fabulous Lucy Sullivan. Plus it helps when you google her name, pictures of her in a Supergirl costume pop up, so clearly she’s just as nerdy as Lucy 😉 I’ve only seen the show Castle a couple times, but her obvious spirit is easy to imagine on the Donovan Circus grounds.

Zena Gray

Zena Gray

Zena Gray is an actress I’m unfamiliar with, but I think this above photo is definitely a great match for Lucy. This shot makes me think of a strong Lucy, someone who will do whatever it takes for her and her friends to survive. Plus, she’s beautiful but in a very natural way (as hardly anyone wears makeup outside of the actual circus show).

So there are my three real life lookalikes for my protagonist! Who would you pick out of these three for Lucy? Or is there someone else who might make a good match? Let me know so I can add her to my list!
