Gordy was unexpectedly close, emerald eyes glowing. I took a step back, but he came with me. “You have beautiful eyes,” he said.
Heat rose in me and I dropped my gaze to the floor. “You don’t have to be polite.”
“I’m being honest.” He placed a finger under my chin but I held steady. “A clockface eye,” he said, and I looked up despite myself. Strangers usually saw a flaw.
“That’s what my father used to call it.” The mark in my left eye was clear: two golden dots in the brown of my iris marking north and south, or twelve and six on a clock.
“Then your father was a wise man,” Gordy said with a gentle smile. I found myself smiling, not minding that he’d seen the oddity, pleased it mattered as little to him as it did to my family.
“How about a birthday kiss?”
My heartrate spiked. Gordy was smiling and I couldn’t tell whether it was a joke or he was in earnest. The expression in his green eyes… I corrected myself, remembering: he was a duke and I was … nobody. Therefore, he couldn’t be in earnest, whatever his eyes seemed to be saying.
“Well?”
My heart bumped against my ribs. He had no friends to spend his birthday with and the remnants of his family hadn’t felt the day worth marking – how could I be unkind enough to say no? My gaze was trapped by his eyes, green with flecks of gold. And yet … he was a toff and I … wasn’t. It couldn’t mean anything, and I didn’t want my first kiss to be meaningless. I blinked at the realisation that if I kissed Gordy it wouldn’t be meaningless – for me.
While all that had been running through my head, though, Gordy had got bored waiting for me. Before I knew what was happening he leaned forward, closing the space between us so our lips met. I’d never kissed anyone who wasn’t family; never kissed a boy before. His lips were cool, chilled against my own, and the contrast startled me into moving away, stepping back to renew the space between us, my gaze stuck now on his lips.
They curved into a smile. “Today’s looking better already.”

Katy Haye spends as much time as possible lost in a good book. She has a fearsome green tea habit, a partiality for dark chocolate brazils and a fascination with the science of storytelling. When not reading or writing, she can usually be found on her allotment, growing veg in case of a zombie apocalypse.
