Today I am so pleased to host my good friend Michelle Nicole and talk about her new book, SOUL SURVIVOR! Michelle is pretty much one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met and I am SO proud of her work and can’t wait to read my own copy! Without further ado, here’s Michelle with her guest post on the inspiration behind her book (and keep reading for a special excerpt!)
Inspiration behind Soul Survivor
It was late in 2010—I’d just finished reading The Hunger Games and a few other amazing books which set me on the path to ask myself, What would it be like to save the world? To really have the power—the opportunity to be able to truly change things for the better on a large scale (because I truly believe we all have the power to do so on a small scale). I mulled this over for a while and then one day in the bathroom while getting ready for work Hailee arrived!
She came onto the scene and everyone else quickly followed suit. I’m a panster and tend to write in scenes (often non-sequential order), which is hilarious because “in real life” everything I do is planned, organized and calculated. I wrote the opening scene first—a scene inspired by the 3 Doors Down song, “She is Love.” Music is a huge inspiration in my writing and I’d say 98% of what I write I can trace back to a particular song. Breaking Benjamin became the greatest influence in writing Soul Survivor which is evident if you check out the playlist.
My supernatural being of choice—angels was an obvious one. I LOVE angel books and thought it was a being I could easily define without too many preconceived notions. I mean who wouldn’t want a sexy Guardian angel watching over you? Cue Alex!
Alex rolled right onto the page and stole my heart. He captured everything I expected an angel to be—strong, handsome, virtuous, and of course tall. 😉 But then things got a little sticky—cause nothing is ever as simple as girl meets Guardian—saves world—end of story. I mean really where’s the fun in that?
With the arrival of Amitel, Hailee’s world begins to tilt. Amitel’s most obnoxious qualities—her beauty and knowledge of the truth—quickly become her most endearing ones as well. She keeps the story grounded and gives Hailee the honesty and transparency most of the characters can’t seem to manage.
Finally when Seth rolled onto the page all bets were off. The world I’d begun to construct was completely knocked off kilter with the arrival of Mr. Darkness. He first revealed his depth to me in the Interference chapter. At that point, everything became ten times more complicated for my gal Hailee! And sooo fun to write!
The supporting cast—Hailee’s family and Professor Drake wove themselves effortlessly into the story, each of them carrying a piece of Hailee and the secrets surrounding her life. They all fit perfectly into Hailee’s life and as you will come to learn (in Soul Survivor and future books) all are significant.
Soul Survivor quickly became a journey not only for Hailee but for myself. You’ll find a lot of my heart and soul woven into every page as this numbers girl crossed over into the world of words. It’s been thrilling, terrifying, and my most satisfying endeavor to date. Letting loose while my characters send me flying by the seat of my pants has been such a life changing experience. And the journey is just beginning! I’ve been hard at work with Hailee on Soul Searcher, the sequel to Soul Survivor and the ride just keeps getting wilder. More truths. More obstacles. More Alex. More Seth. More Hailee. Just MORE!
I hope you stop by the rest of the tour stops on the Soul Survivor blog tour—interviews, excerpts, angels! Oh my! Major thank you to the lovely Liz Long for participating and allowing me to commandeer her awesome blog for a day! Thank you, Liz! You’re amazing! ❤

She spends her days working as a CPA and her nights weaving tales of love, friendship, and everything in between.
When she’s not working or writing, you’ll find her binge watching her favorite TV shows, reading, tweeting, hanging with her husband and furry children, or spending time with her close knit extended family.
PLUS! We have a special excerpt she’s sharing with us today:
Excerpt #3 (Interrogating the Darkness Excerpt)
Seth looked straight into my eyes, his mouth inches from my lips, just like in my dreams. My body reacted the same: heart racing, adrenaline pumping. Focus, Hailee, focus. I looked away in an attempt to regain control of myself.
“How did you know I was? I mean, how did you get here so fast?” I stared directly into his liquid caramel eyes. Their beauty was overwhelming. Even in the dimly lit room I could make them out perfectly. They were even more amazing than they’d been in my dreams.
“You really want that answer?” His voice was low and raspy.
I nodded. His face so close, his cool breath brushed across my lips, making them ache with the desire to be kissed. His liquid irises were so clearly visible in the dark, swirling around like a whirlpool as he spoke.
“Why do your eyes do that?” Those eyes were so enthralling. I could stare into them all day.
“Do what?” They swirled again. A smirk pulled at the edge of his lips.
I didn’t catch on to his sarcasm. “That thing where your irises look like liquid, like ocean waves.” He’s positively mesmerizing.
“I don’t know. Most people who stare deeply into my eyes don’t tend to remember or live to tell the tale. I was hoping the first time was a fluke, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.” A smile brightened his face.
He kept diverting my interrogation. “You don’t want to answer my questions.”
“You ask too many. But to answer one of your questions, I’ve been curious about you since our last encounter. So I’ve been watching you very closely.” He moved even closer, his lips almost grazing mine.
“Stalker.” The word came out of my mouth before I could stop myself. I jumped back, covering my mouth quickly. I just insulted the Darkness. What kind of consequences will come from that?
