So I’m doing a lot of writing and research in preparation for my book release. I would like to first state that indie publishing is not as easy as writing a book, uploading it, and crossing your fingers while waiting for the orders to come in. I feel like I’ve barely covered the first half of my to-do list, but at least I’ve got a great community to help when I have questions or feel like throwing things.
One of the more important things to do after writing your book is to give it an exciting synopsis, something to go on your back cover that will hook readers into trying out the first chapter. I actually finished my book, stepped away for a while, came back for edits and rewrites, stepped back again, then came back to finish it out, including the summary. My good friend Courtney suggested a couple things, which definitely helped (like I never thought to have a “tag line,” something that you can later use for marketing purposes or Twitter blurbs). The synopsis is officially up on Goodreads while I wait for my cover to be finished
Without further ago, here is the back cover summation of my book:
Gifted, a Donovan Circus novel:
Even in a world of freaks, being a Firestarter is considered a dangerous Gift.
Lucy was born with the ability to create and control fire. She longs to leave the human world for one filled with Earthshakers, Transporters, and Chameleons, to name a few. When she rejoins the circus, it’s everything she hoped it could be—new friends, a potential love interest or two, and a place where she can be herself.
When troupe members begin turning up dead, however, Lucy is suspected of foul play. She must not only prove her innocence but also realize the full extent of her power. To find the real murderer, she must uncover the truth behind her father’s fiery legacy while figuring out whom to trust within her new circle. Little does she know the history of the Donovan Circus and its enemies might actually destroy the entire gifted world.
So…catchy enough for you? I’m hoping that it is! We’re only a couple weeks out from the release!
Yes! Where will it be available? (Please say BN/Google Play/ABK-Anything But Kindle.)
Wow thank you! I’m going to have it for Kindle, yes, however, I will have paperback copies available to order (or I can get one to you). I also plan to upload to B&N, just gotta figure out how to do it 🙂
Yeah, it would be silly NOT to have it on Kindle 🙂 I’m just on the BN platform, so I can’t get anything from Amazon. Just let me know when it’s ready!
You got it! 🙂
Great text for the back cover! My suggestion is either get rid of “Earthshakers, Transporters and Chameleons” or explain what they are. It may seem obvious to readers as well as you but the jargon terms may be more alienating than using a blanket term (inclusive language).
Good luck. Love it otherwise. Catchy!
Thanks! The way I wrote the story, it sort of throws the reader into everything immediately so–I was more or less hoping people would wonder what it meant and want to read a few pages to find out… 🙂
